A l'origine...

Quelques anecdotes:

“In My Time of Dying” est le titre d'une chanson de Led Zeppelin.

- Jim Beaver's character (Bobby Singer) was only supposed to make a one-time appearance.

- Jeffrey Dean Morgan (John Winchester) is only twelve years older than his on-screen older son, Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester).

- None of the cast or crew members ever expected the show to last as long as it has. Misha Collins (Castiel) has stated that at the 100th episode party, someone said "Maybe we'll see you at the 200th!" and everyone laughed at the idea, thinking the show would be long gone by that time. The party for the 200th episode of the series took place in October 2014.

- Creator Eric Kripke only planned for the show to last for five seasons, which is why the season five finale was titled "Swan Song". Also, the record company for Led Zeppelin was Swan Song Records.

- Riverview Hospital, a large mental health facility used as the main set in the season one episode "Asylum", has also substituted for a prison, a regular hospital, and an apartment building on different episodes of the show. This is evidenced by seeing the same distinctive staircase in different episodes.

- There is a particular clock that shows up in almost every episode.

- An important aspect of the show's music is classic rock, most of which comes from Eric Kripke's own record collection, although one of his favorite bands - Led Zeppelin - has always been too expensive to license.

- Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) dislocated his shoulder while wrestling with Osric Chau (Kevin Tran). The writers were then forced to make up a story, as to why Sam was wearing a sling in the beginning of season ten.

- Originally, Jensen Ackles auditioned for the role of Sam Winchester. When Jared Padalecki came in and read for Sam, a slight recasting was done. Producers called Jensen and asked if he'd rather use his charm for Dean, saying he was the Han Solo character of the duo, and what kid didn't grow up wanting to be Han Solo? Jensen accepted. It became known that he was previously interested in that role, because Dean was funny.

- The Latin inscription on the barrel of the Colt gun says "Non timebo mala", which translates to "I will fear no evil".

- Misha Collins (Castiel) originally read for the role of a demon in his audition because the angels were a secret at the time.

- With the CW's announcement that Supernatural was renewed for a twelfth season, It breaks the current record for the second longest running consecutive science fiction series, second to the BBC's Dr. Who. Smallville (2001) (which also featured Jensen Ackles) held the record previously.

- Sam's birth date is May 2, 1983. In 2007, this also became the birthday of Eric Kripke's son, which Kripke describes as "creepy".

- Misha Collins (Castiel) was originally only supposed to make a couple of guest appearances in season four, but due to enormous fan response, he has been a regular on the show ever since. Collins has joked that he maybe wouldn't have used such a low gravelly voice for his role, had he known he'd be on the show so frequently, because it hurts his throat.

- The characters Alastair and Crowley reference notorious occultist Aleister Crowley.

- While it may be coincidental that the choice of the name "Winchester" for the family is interesting. There is a rather famous mansion in California built by Sarah Winchester, wife of the gun magnate, which was under constant construction for 38 years for paranormal reasons. According to legend the reason for the constant building was a medium telling Mrs. Winchester that if she ever stopped building, the spirits of people killed by people using Winchester rifles would come after her. The strange design of the mansion is also attributed to this. It was built with dead ends and stairs to nowhere allegedly to confuse spirits.

- Whenever Sam is shown sleeping in a bed, wide shots typically show that his feet hang over the end of the bed, a silent testament to how tall he is.

- In season two, Linda Blair guest stars as a detective investigating the brothers. At the end of the episode, she says, "I need you two out there doing what you do best. I know I'll sleep better at night." This is clearly a nod to her role as Regan in The Exorcist (1973), as she was possessed by a demon. As the brothers walk away, Dean says, "Does she look familiar to you?" Then he exclaims that he is craving pea soup, which was what Linda Blair projectile vomited in The Exorcist (1973).

- Many episodes are either named after movies ("Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things", "The Usual Suspects", "I Know What You Did Last Summer") or classic rock songs ("In My Time of Dying", "Born Under a Bad Sign", "What is and What Should Never Be", "Sympathy For The Devil", "When The Levee Breaks").

- In the original draft, Dean was supposed to have lots of tattoos, but the show's budget couldn't allow it.

- The show often shares its extras with Psych (2006), as the two shows film in the same area.

- Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki grew up in Texas - Jensen in Richardson, and Jared in San Antonio. Both now live in Austin with their wives and children.

- The car Sam and Dean drive, is a 1967 Chevrolet Impala four-door sedan, which used to be known as the Metallicar by fans of the show. The show uses five black Impalas. Dean has nicknamed the car "Baby", as it is also known by fans today.

- While filming season two, Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester), broke his wrist after performing one of the stunts on the show.

- Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles auditioned for the role of Superman/Clark Kent in some form. Padalecki was a finalist for director McG's reboot, while Ackles was the second choice to play a young Clark Kent in the show Smallville (2001). Jensen was later cast as Jason Teague in season four.

- The role of Ruby was written for Kristen Bell. But she turned it down, Katie Cassidy was cast instead.

- The character of "Bobby Singer" was named after Executive Producer Robert Singer. Dean jokes about that fact, during an episode where their lives are turned into a popular show, Robert Singer.

- The only known sources of income for the Winchesters are credit card scams, poker games and playing pool.

- Many of the episodes are based on existing legends, myths, and ghost stories. For example, the episode "Crossroads" is based in part on the legend of Robert Johnson - who in turn borrowed it from another Blues singer.

- Dean's birth date is January 24, 1979.

- The fourth season is dedicated to Kim Manners, a longtime Executive Producer, and sometimes Director, for the show (as well as for past television shows such as The X-Files (1993)), who died in January 2009.

- If you look closely, you'll notice that many episodes use the set of Bobby's house. In the main room, the wallpaper never changes. Also, the layout of the kitchen is always the same.

- In season two, episode twelve, "Night Shifter", the magazine that Ron shows Sam and Dean (disguised as FBI agents) has a picture of a humanoid metal robot, or "Mandroid" as Ron insists on calling it, with the caption "Cyberman". Both the name "cyberman", and the likeness of the robot, are references to Doctor Who, with the cybermen being prominent antagonists in the show.

- The original concept had a reporter going to investigate the urban legends and writing about them in his column, instead of having the Dean and Sam team up hunting concept.

- The Supernatural fan base is repeatedly referenced throughout the show, and even makes a few special appearances, including the 200th episode. This was made possible through the character Chuck Shurley, and his prophetic book series about the Winchesters.

- Whenever the brothers are introduced (by their real names) by themselves or others they are almost always referred to as Sam and Dean rather than Dean and Sam. This is a nod to Jared Padalecki's name being displayed first in the opening credits. Only in season one, episode eight, do they refer themselves as Dean and Sam.

- Dean's car, up until season two, episode twenty, had Kansas (the brother's origin state) plates, with the number KAZ 2Y5. It currently now has Ohio (Eric Kripke's home state) plates, with a Franklin county sticker (25) and the number CNK 80Q3. The plates are changed again in later seasons to Oregon plates SMD 5B2, as seen in season seven, episode thirteen.

- Lauren Cohen (Bela) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (John) star in The Walking Dead (2010) together. They also played Thomas and Martha Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

- Hannah the angel first appeared as a nurse at the hospital in the season one episode "Faith", and then she also played a young mother in the season one episode "Something Wicked".

- Jensen Ackles was a groomsman in Jared's wedding.

- Eric Kripke is a big fan of classic rock, and thus wanted it to be played on the show. He wrote in the pages of the pilot script "CUE MUSIC And you can take your anemic alternative pop and shove it up your ass. Dean plays bass thumping, pile driving Zeppelin, and he plays it loud."

- In season one episode four "Phantom Traveler", Dean and Sam discover that every time someone says God's name in Latin (or Christo for Christ) out loud, demons will react most ferociously. They never used that same tactic ever again.

- Sebastian Roché (Balthazar), Misha Collins (Castiel), Kurt Fuller (Zachariah), and Mark Sheppard (Crowley) all appeared in the television series Charmed (1998). Roché and Sheppard both played demonic characters, while Fuller and Collins played characters in need of help.

- Jared Padalecki had to leave Gilmore Girls (2000) to be on this show. The same happened with Jensen Ackles, who had to leave Smallville (2001). Both shows were from The WB .

- In season one, Sam and Dean posing as FBI Agents use the aliases "Agent Ford" and "Agent Hamill". This is a reference to Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, the two main actors in Star Wars, which Jensen Ackles (Dean) loves very much.

-In season two episode eighteen, called "Hollywood Babylon" while walking to stage 9, Dean mentions wanting to take time off and go swimming, to which Sam responds "This seem like swimming pool weather to you Dean? It's practically Canadian." This is a nod to the actual filming locations in the show, which are all in Canada. Also, a play at Jared playing a love interest on Gilmore Girls (2000).

- Whenever a character is having a drink from a "to go" cup through a straw, especially Dean, you almost always hear a gurgling sound as if the cup is almost empty, even if it was just purchased.

- After the first season, the show was picked up by The CW after The WB merged with UPN, forming The CW.

- All four members of the band Led Zeppelin have been used as aliases for the brothers. In season eight, Sam and Dean used the aliases Bonham and Jones. In an earlier season, they used Plant and Page.

- The character of Bobby Singer was originally supposed to be named Bobby Manners, after Robert Singer and Kim Manners, who had both greatly contributed to the show. However, after discovering that there was an actual Bobby Manners, the character's last name was changed to Singer.

- Dean's car, a 1967 Chevrolet Impala, is shown to have spotlights on the front of car. In later episodes, they are missing.

- Marc Singer and Bruce Campbell were the original choices for the John Winchester role.

- In season four episode eighteen, when Sam and Dean meet the man who writes about them, they eat in a diner called Kripke Hollow, after show runner Eric Kripke.

- The role of Cain was written for Timothy Omundson.

- The boys started wearing suits, to appear more professional, in the fourth episode. This is also the first episode where you see demons.

- The round blue/skull sticker on the top of Sam's season one laptop is from a prominent local North Vancouver mountain bike company, Deep Cove Bike Shop.

- January 8, 2017, it was announced that the show was renewed for a thirteenth season.

- This is the second time Jensen Ackles plays a sibling to a character named Sami/Sammy, as he previously appeared on the daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives (1965), as Eric, twin brother to Alison Sweeney's Samantha Brady. Sweeney's character usually went by the name Sami. Ackles' character tends to call his brother Sam, "Sammy" on this show.

- Misha Collins has created something on Tumblr called "Mishapocalypse" where on April 1st, everyone in the supernatural fandom does the following: Posts pictures of Misha, changes their profile picture to Misha's serial killer face, refers to each other as Misha, and trick other fandoms.

- Jensen Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have had connections to the characters of Batman and Superman. Ackles had a voice role in Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010), as well as a supporting role in the fourth season of Smallville (2001). Jeffrey Dean Morgan had a cameo role as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

- In a season two episode, Amber Benson plays a "vegetarian" vampire Lenore who refuses to feed on humans. Amber is best known for her character Tara, a witch who is friends with, and helps, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).

- Samantha Smith, who plays Mary Winchester, is only nine years older than Jensen Ackles, who plays her older son.

- A crossover with Smallville (2001) was proposed, but scrapped. Sam and Dean would have to save Tom Welling from the infamous "Superman curse" that has supposedly victimized several actors that have played Clark Kent/Superman.

- Ty Olsson (who plays Benny Lafitte), also appeared in season two, episode four, as a different "vegetarian" vampire, named Eli.

- Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jared Padalecki, and Jensen Ackles have all been associated with the name Dean. Jared's character in Gilmore Girls (2000) was named Dean, Jensen's character on this show is named Dean, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan has Dean for his middle name.

- Lauren Tom (Linda Tran) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (John Winchester) both appeared in an episode of Grey's Anatomy (2005) together. Season two, episode thirteen "Begin the Begin".

- In first couple of seasons, the Winchester brothers Sam and Dean were often mistaken for a gay couple in several episodes.

- The motel rooms where Sam and Dean stay overnight in each episode, used to have a room divider of some sort.

- In season twelve, Dean (Jensen Ackles), can be seen playing the game Scrabble on his phone, with his mom (Mary Winchester) as his opponent. After he plays the word "twerking", the next set of letters for his next turn spells out the name "Lucifer".

- Jared's nickname is Jerry, and Jensen's is Jesse. Back in the 1990s, when he wasn't a star yet, Jensen Ackles was known only as Jesse Ackles, before he decided to use his full first name instead, when his career started in Dark Angel (2000), starring Jessica Alba.

- Dean and Sam's last names, in the episode "It's a Terrible Life," (Smith and Wesson) combined is a gun brand, just like their real last name, Winchester.

- In season five episode three, in Sam's phone contacts, the last person under the letter C, is Cassidy, and the first under B is Butch. Butch Cassidy.

- Resembles, by concept, The Forsaken (2001) starring Brendan Fehr and Kerr Smith as two vampire slayers, who team up and drive across America in the same car, with a similar mission of the Winchester brothers, except being just best friends instead.

- In the show, Jared Padalecki plays Sam Winchester. Sam Winchester's brother's name is Dean. Padalecki played Dean Forester in Gilmore Girls (2000).

- Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles did remakes of classic horror movies that were released in 2009. Jared starred in Friday the 13th (2009) with Danielle Panabaker, and Jensen starred in My Bloody Valentine (2009) with Jaime King. All of them have, and still are working on television shows on The CW. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki on this show, Jaime King on Hart of Dixie (2011), and Danielle Panabaker on The Flash (2014).

- Around season six, the brothers start wearing Suunto brand watches. Dean wears the Suunto Core, and Sam wears the Suunto Vector.

- Chuck's screen-name (Carver Edlund) comes from the last names of two of the shows producers (Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund).

- In season two, episode eighteen, the posters on the screenwriters office wall depict a Monster Horror Truck and Carnival, both of which were storylines in season one. Also, the director of the horror film in this episode's storyline, is none other than the Executive Producer of the show, McG.

- Charles Whitfield and Mark Pellegrino appeared on Ghost Whisperer (2005).

- Prior to their casting for this show, both lead actors had previous experiences with horror films: Jensen Ackles starred in Devour (2005), and Jared Padalecki played a prominent role in House of Wax (2005).

- Plenty of fanfiction stories about Dean and Castiel's (a.k.a. Destiel) purely fictional romantic relationship posted by the fans, is currently available on the Web.

- Angels were introduced in season four, when Castiel appeared for the first time. Dean didn't believed in angels, unlike Sam. With Castiel and the other angels, Supernatural soon turned into Apocalypse, changing the whole concept to match Christian ideology.

- Titus Welliver (one of the 4 horsemen) and Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer) played evil versus good brothers on "Lost."

- This show shared many sets with the show Psych.

- Early on in the series, Dean's cell number is given, and for a while, the studio had it set up, so that anyone dialing the number, would hear Jensen Ackles reading the message: "This is Dean Winchester. If this is an emergency, leave a message. If you are calling about 11-2-83, page me with your coordinates." The number is 1-866-907-3235. This number now leads to a fax machine, but it is not known where that fax machine ends up.11-2-83 is Sam and Dean's mother Mary Winchester's death date.

- Producers considered several methods of motivating Sam to take to the road with Dean. Turning Jessica evil was an option briefly, but in taking a page from Star Wars, it was decided that her death would be the ultimate motivation for leaving home.

- The first time Dean goes back in time and sees his mom, she is wearing a bracelet, and on the bracelet is a men of letters symbol.

- Sam was sick for a large part of season eight, due to the Demon Trials, and Jared Padalecki's performance was so convincing, that a portion of fans became concerned about him, worrying that he was actually sick.

- Genevieve Cortese was cast as Ruby for the fourth season (replacing Katie Cassidy), and her character eventually becomes romantically involved with Sam (Jared Padalecki). In their real lives, Cortese and Padalecki also became romantically involved, and after they married in 2010, she changed her last name to "Padalecki", both personally and professionally.

- Jared Padalecki has played the greatest number of characters for an individual actor. He not only plays Sam Winchester, but he also played Lucifer, Gadreel, Leviathan Sam, Souless Sam, Shapeshifter Sam, Himself, and briefly Meg. Oddly enough, Jensen Ackles, his on-screen brother, has played the fewest characters, playing only Dean Winchester, Leviathan Dean, Shapeshifter Dean, and Himself. In a later season, he also played Demon Dean, when the mark of Cain changed him. Demon Dean makes his first appearance in season three episode ten.

- Several references, throughout his appearances on the series, point toward the character Rufus Turner (played by Steven Williams) being Jewish. He makes jokes about Hanukkah and keeping kosher, and most significantly, when he dies, the Winchester brothers and Bobby give him a funeral in a Jewish cemetery, and discuss his level of Jewish ritual observance (or lack thereof). Although the funerals for previous hunters had included a ceremonial funeral pyre, the show makes a point of showing that Rufus gets buried without cremation (since cremation is against Jewish tradition).

- Dean's primary sidearm is a Colt Series 70 1911, with a nickel finish, full engraving, and ivory grips, chambered in .45acp. Sam carries a Taurus PT92 with a stainless steel finish, mother of pearl grips, and chambered in 9mm. The only exception is season six when Sam loses his soul. "Soulless Sam" carries an HK USP Expert chambered in 9mm. Once Sam regains his soul, he switches back to the Taurus PT92.

- In the show, Chuck, a.k.a. God, uses a pen name to write the Supernatural books: Carver Edlund. The producer's name is Ben Edlund, and the co-producer's name is Jeremy Carver. Putting the last names together results with Chuck's pen name.

- In the episode "The Girl Next Door", there's a scene where a leviathan is checking over a credit card statement and asks about "Mistress Magda", before hanging up on the customer, because of getting a trace on Dean and Sam. Mistress Magda is the name Chuck says when he answers the phone in Swan Song when Dean calls for the location of the fight between Michael and the Devil, the thought to be the last time we see Chuck, and he mysteriously disappears in a puff of white smoke.

- In season one episode fifteen, it is stated that Deans height is 6'4", the same as his brother Sam, but Sam is clearly taller than Dean.

- The biblical Burning Bush Sam sees at the beginning of season eleven, episode nine, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", is a popular ornamental shrub in the Euonymus genus, Euonymus alatus, commonly known for its fiery autumn foliage as "Burning Bush".

- There's a Herpexia ad in the top right corner of the lab in the beginning of season five, episode twenty, in reference to Sam's herpes commercial in season five, episode eight.

- In the season five episode "Fallen Idols", Paris Hilton is a guest star. In the end of that episode, Dean says: "I've never even seen house of wax." House of Wax (2005) is a horror movie starring Paris Hilton and Jared Padalecki.

- In season four, episode seventeen, "A Terrible Life", Dean and Sam are both put into an alternative life by an angel, they don't know who each other are, and they are called Dean Smith and Sam Wesson. A reference to the famous weapons company Smith and Wesson.

- In the season eleven episode, "The Devil in the Details", while Sam is in the cage with Lucifer, Sam asks what he (Lucifer) will do after killing Amara. Lucifer responds with, "move to L.A., solve crimes." This is a nod to the FOX show Lucifer (2015), where Lucifer lives in Los Angeles, and works with L.A.P.D. detective Chloe Decker to solve crimes.

- Even though Rowena is Crowley's mother, the actress who plays Rowena (Ruth Connell) is fifteen years younger than the actor who plays Crowley (Mark Sheppard).

- When Lilith appears in season three, episode twelve, "Jus In Bello", she is a different little girl than when she appears in the last episode of season three.

- John and Mary are a reference to Jesus' parents from the New Testament. John Winchester baptizes Dean and Sam into the life of hunting monsters, and Mary gives birth to the two men that will decide the fate of the world. As can be seen in the progression of the series, many of the demons, ghosts, and enemies of Sam and Dean, are based on legends and stories from different cultures. The series in particular has a biblical storyline, and as depicted by the names of the Winchester's parents, the brothers were born to live and fight during the Apocalypse, as the saviors of the world and mankind. Although the series itself was not specifically designed to offend anyone, there is an underlying story line of angels and demons, and their fight for Earth in the end times, and to show how things can be divided.

- In season four, it was said that Dean's necklace amulet burned bright and hot when God is near. When the brothers met Carver Edlund (Chuck) in that same season, it never burned. In season eleven, episode twenty, "Don't Call Me Shurley" however, Dean's amulet "appears" in Sam's pocket, and glows when near Chuck.

- In S11 E10 "Devil in the Details" when Sam is talking to Lucifer in the cage at 30:35, Lucifer makes a remark about what he would do if he were topside again. Sam asks "Even if you did gank her then what?" To which Lucifer quickly responded "Move to L. A., solve crimes." which had a strong possibility of being a very direct hat tip to Fox networks brand new show at the time "Lucifer", one having that exact plot line. Coincidentally enough, the pilot episode of "Lucifer" aired exactly 5 days (1/25/16) after the first airing of this Supernatural episode on CW (1/20/16).

- Cain's house in Season 9 Episode 11 (First Born) where Dean and Crowley go to find the first blade which ends up being Cain's house, is the exact same house that was used in a previous episode Season 3 Episode 1 (The Magnificent Seven) at the beginning when Sam and Dean are "Outside Lincoln, Nebraska" where Bobby has just sent them to investigate.
